- Staking means locking a proof-of-stake coin (like ETH or SOL) to help secure its network, in return for rewards paid in that same coin.
- Native staking delegates the coin directly and often has a waiting period to unstake. Liquid staking gives you a receipt token you can sell instead of waiting. Restaking adds extra yield and extra risk.
- The rate is in the coin, so if its price falls you can lose money in dollars even while earning rewards.

How the native rate is calculated: inflation 10.0% × supply × (1 − community tax 2%) ÷ bonded ATOM = 15.45%. Source: chain API ↗. It's a network-wide estimate: your validator's commission comes out of it, and uptime or slashing can change what you actually get.
How ATOM staking works
Cosmos Hub stakers delegate ATOM to validators and earn newly minted ATOM. The rate is high mostly because new ATOM is being created: if you don't stake, your share shrinks. Validators take a commission (often 5-10%) from the rate shown.

What can go wrong
- Smart-contract risk: liquid staking and restaking tokens are contracts that can have bugs.
- Slashing: validators that misbehave or go offline can lose part of the stake, and stakers share the loss.
- Depeg / exit rush: in a panic, receipt tokens can trade below the coin they represent for a while.
- Price risk: the yield is paid in ATOM. If ATOM falls 30%, a 5% yield doesn't save you.
- Exchange-issued tokens depend on the exchange staying solvent and honest.
